Tractor was the mode of transport favoured by Community Nurse Carole Wells as she pulled up to Smallfield surgery last Thursday.
As about a foot of snow and treacherous icy conditions hit Smallfield and much of the country during the middle of last week, many patients and health care staff were forced to stay at home. But the community nursing team was not to be thwarted and a tractor was borrowed in order for the most vulnerable patients in the area to be visited.
Dr Terry Conaty, Partner at Smallfield Surgery, says the arrival of Carole on her husband’s tractor “shows the commitment of the community staff in these difficult conditions”.
In many ways the snowy conditions saw the Smallfield community pull together to keep the surgery running a near normal service. While some staff struggled to get to work, others stayed with friends and colleagues locally in order to ensure an adequate compliment of staff. Ellie, the daughter of reception supervisor Tracey Merritt, came to help on reception and one young patient turned up early to his appointment, offering assistance clearing the snow at the front of the surgery.
